Five formerly unbeaten teams are out of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution high school football rankings after suffering their first defeats.
Previous No. 6 Walton (5-1) was routed by No. 3 Roswell 48-14 on Friday in Class AAAAAA. The newcomer in the AAAAAA rankings is Peachtree Ridge (4-2), which has losses to No. 4 Archer and an out-of-state opponent but a victory over No. 7 McEachern.
Previous AAAA No. 5 Thomson (4-1) also fell from the unbeaten, losing to Burke County 26-21. Burke (5-1), which hasn’t lost to a Georgia opponent, took Thomson’s place in the Top 10.
Elbert County, Westside-Macon and Adairsville, which had been unbeaten in AAA, each lost, but Elbert survived in the Top 10, settling at No. 6, after falling to No. 3 Jefferson 27-9.
Previous No. 7 Westside (5-1) was replaced by Jackson (4-1), which hadn’t been ranked this late in a season since 2009. Jackson beat Westside 31-29 last week.
Previous No. 9 Adairsville (4-1) also dropped out after losing to No. 1 Calhoun 45-13. Callaway (4-1) joined the AAA rankings at No. 10.
The fifth unbeaten team to drop out of the rankings was previous No. 8 Model (5-1), which lost to No. 6 Darlington 28-22 in AA. Brooks County (4-2) rejoined the rankings at No. 10
The final newcomer in the rankings is Charlton County in A. Charlton (4-1) beat previous No. 4 Irwin County (3-2-1) 28-14. Irwin dropped out.
The previous Top 10 went 42-7 last week. All seven losses were against teams currently ranked. The new Top 10 went 47-1 last week.
This week, only two games match ranked teams. They are No. 1 Colquitt County at No. 6 Lee County (AAAAAA) and No. 6 Marist at No. 9 St. Pius (AAAA).
